Heart failure symptoms

Symptoms, signs and problems of heart failure vary. Which symptoms of heart failure do we know of and what is a heart failure anyway?

What is a heart failure?

A heart failure is a complex disorder. It is difficult to determine what causes a heart failure. Heart failure means your heart is not pumping enough blood around so you have less energy, but also other organs may fail due to a shortage of blood. The amount of blood that your heart pumps through your body is ultimately equivalent to the amount of blood your body needs. You can see it as a water pump. When a water pump malfunctions, not enough water flows out of the pump. The heart operates in a similar way and when the heart does not pump well, blood will start to build up around the heart.

Other signs and symptoms heart failure

The above symptoms are also common with other diseases. If you have one or more of these symptoms it does not necessarily mean you suffer from a heart failure. Always go see a doctor, since he is able to determine if there is a heart failure.

Chronic heart failure symptoms

Symptoms you can have when you suffer for an extended period of time from heart failure are cardiac arrhythmias and fluid in the lungs. An arrhythmia is extremely dangerous. It can even lead to a cardiac arrest. If you have fluid in your lungs, you should go directly to the hospital. In any case, an ambulance needs to be called. If you have fluids behind your lungs your heart is in a critical condition.

Heart failure types

Which types of heart failure do we know?

The movement of the heart happens in 2 steps:

  1. Systole: this contracts the heart. If this does not happen like it should it is called systolic heart failure.
  2. Diastole: this relaxes the heart. Heart failure with a diastole is called diastolic failure of the heart.

Systolic heart failure

It is quite possible that both types of heart failure occur simultaneously. When the heart fails systolic, the heart pulls together less powerful causing less blood to flow out. This is the most common cause of a heart failure.

Diastolic heart failure

When the heart diastolic fails then its not relaxing the heart well when it is in a resting phase. Consequently not enough blood flows into the heart and it will pump less blood into the body per beat. As a result, the organs and tissues are retaining moisture and therefore they get an insufficient amount of blood which means oxygen, in order to keep functioning well. Because less blood is pumped to your organs, you are tired quickly.
