What is HIV?

HIV is a virus that the causes the AIDS disease. AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease that is incurable. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficient Virus. We can divide the HIV virus in two categories; HIV 1 and HIV 2.

HIV 2 mainly occurs in West African countries, but HIV 1 affects people from all over the world. The virus attacks the immune system so they body can no longer ward off infections and diseases after some time.

What is the effect of the HIV virus on the immune system? When the immune system is at its weakest point it becomes susceptible to infections. These infections are called opportunistic infections. The diagnosis of AIDS is made when the HIV-infected person shows symptoms of such infections. Many people are often unaware of the fact that they are infected with HIV. It can be very long before you show physical symptoms. There are also people who do not develop any symptoms at all after being infected with the virus.

Symptoms HIV conversion flu

What are symptoms of HIV? About 80 to 90 percent of the people infected with HIV have to deal with the conversion flu eventually. The conversion flu consists of flu-like symptoms and signs that will occur within a few days to up a few weeks after contracting the virus. Symptoms of conversion flu are:

  • Having a fever.
  • Suffer from sweating during the night.
  • Having skin rashes.
  • Severe headaches.
  • Very tired.
  • Sudden weight loss for no reason.
  • Feeling nausea and vomiting.
  • Enlarged and swollen lymph glands in the neck.

Generally, a person becomes ill within two to four weeks. The conversion flu generally lasts shorter but has more severe symptoms than the standard flu. The symptoms generally disappear again on their own. The infected person feels normal again and shows no symptoms. Not having symptoms often takes years. During this phase the person is still a carrier of the virus and they can infect others with the virus.

What are the symptoms that can occur after the period of 'health'? We can distinguish the following HIV signs and symptoms .

  • Tremendous feeling of fatigue.
  • A lot of sweating during the night.
  • Weight loss, although there is no explanation for it.
  • Elevated body temperature until fever.
  • Unpleasant, persistent diarrhea.
  • Shortness of breath.
